Hill (2012) suggests that when children begin to write, they can tell more complex stories then what they can write. This is because there are a number of aspects involved in the process of writing. The first being the key principals in the Early Development of Writing:

  • SIGN: Letters and symbols stand for something
  • FLEXIBILITY: Some letters are allowable and some are not. The same letter can be written in several ways.
  • LINEAR: English is written left to right in lines that go across the page
  • WORD SPACING: Where one word ends and another begin

After comprehending these key principals, then mastering them the children will move through five stages of writing:

  • Beginning
  • Early Emergent
  • Emergent
  • Early
  • Transitional

  • Composing - Selecting and idea from a range of possibilities to develop into a message Choosing words, sentences and phrases to convey a message Re-reading writing to check clarity Expand ideas and add ideas, then connect them together
  • Revising - Read and check the work in progress Reword Reorganise add to and delete from the text

2.Secretarial - Dealing with the surface features of writing

  • Recording - Spelling
Grammar
Punctuation

  • Publishing - Preparing for a presentation
Considering the needs of a specific audience
Selecting from a range of media for publishing
